The
Morris Farm Trust is both a working farm and an educational resource for
the communities of mid coast Maine. Our certified organic 50 acres now
support a demonstration and educational garden, pastured
poultry, pigs,
cows, sheep, four draft horses and three dozen laying hens. The remaining 10 acres of our land is wooded
and features an interpretive trail that connects to an adjacent forest.
A yurt in the woods is available for summer campers.
Founded
in 1994, the Morris Farm was created in an effort to preserve and operate
one of the last remaining farms in Wiscasset. In the ensuing ten years,
trustees, community volunteers, members, and staff have worked tirelessly
to restore and expand the farm's buildings and to rejuvenate the land.
By all measures, our progress has been impressive. Contemporaneous with
the renovation of the farm has been the development of educational programming
designed to provide children and adults with the knowledge and skills
to understand sustainable agriculture concepts, grow their own food, and
support the local food system.
The
Morris Farm offers fieldtrips and after school programs for kindergarten
through high school students tied to state academic achievement standards
that provide hands-on, real life educational experiences for children
of all
levels and academic ability as well as year-round lectures, events and
demonstrations for both children and adults.
All
of our programs rely on participation from trained community volunteers
and utilize the farm's land and animals to foster respect for the earth
and to instill a sense of shared responsibility for the wise stewardship
of natural resources. The farm's programs for adults range from gardening
workshops to seminars by advocates of sustainable agriculture and
practitioners of traditional handcrafts and farmer-to-farmer training
and information exchanges. The farm also operates an organic farm apprentice
program.
Products
produced on the farm are for sale seasonally in the farm lobby (self-service,
honor system) and include unpasteurized milk, eggs, beef, chicken, pork
and vegetables.
Please welcome the Morris Farm's
First Farming Family!
The Morris Farm is proud to announce a new model at the farm. So that we may streamline our staff and focus fully on our educational programming, we have decided to move to a new farm model. As of April 1st, the Morris Farm Education Center will be leasing its farm operations and farmhouse to local farmers (and previous Morris Farm staffers) Amy and Jeff Burchstead. Amy and Jeff are members of CEI’s vitally important Farms for the Future Program.
This farm model will be the first of its kind in the State of Maine, and we hope that it will offer inspiration to other farmland trusts, in Maine as well as throughout New England. As part of our lease arrangement, Amy and Jeff will contribute a portion of their time to the Farm’s education programs and other events. They will be selling their eggs and other farm products on premises under their own farm name, Buckwheat Blossom Farm. We are delighted to welcome Amy and Jeff, and their new daughter, Ruth, back to the Farm!
This is an exciting opportunity for the Morris Farm to trim its budget and strengthen its educational programming, while at the same time supporting a young farm family as it grows its own business and provides us a greater variety of farm animals and a larger farming presence. Cows, horses, sheep, chickens and—you can be sure—Wiscasset’s favorite American Guinea Hog, Samson, will continue to play starring roles in our education programs. Although our lease arrangement with the Burchsteads does not include dairy cows, we have found excellent local homes for Mattie, Maya, Abby, Amber and Sage, and we will continue to stock high quality raw, organic milk from the Straw Dairy Farm in New Castle. We hope that you share our excitement!
